Quenas are end blown flute used as a lead instrument in the Andean music. Very common in Peru and Bolivia. Pre -Columbian specimens made of bone and clay were found in ruins of ancient Inca civilizations from 900 BC. Today are made of cane or bamboo up to 50 centimeters long with 5 to six finger holes. A thumb hole and a sharp notch cut in the upper rim to blow through.
Combined sometimes with other wind instruments as the zampona or just with other quenas doing different voices this instrument produces one of the most characteristic sounds of Andean music
